The Cottage Grove Watering Rules (Including the One Nobody Knows)

Cottage Grove uses an odd/even schedule based on the last digit of your house number. Even addresses (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) water on even calendar days; odd addresses (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) water on odd days.

Two details worth programming into your controller:

  • No watering between noon and 4 p.m., any day. (Note this is a different window than neighboring Woodbury, which bans noon to 5 p.m. If you moved here from Woodbury, your old habits are an hour off.)
  • No watering on the 31st of the month. This rule exists because a 31st followed by a 1st would otherwise give odd-numbered addresses two watering days in a row. It's easy to miss and easy to program around.

The city treats violations as a misdemeanor offense, so it's worth getting the controller right. These limits apply to properties served by city water.

A Local Billing Quirk That Works in Your Favor

Cottage Grove bills sewer based on your winter-average water use (or actual use, whichever is lower), starting with the April bill. In practice, that means the water you run through your sprinkler system in July isn't driving up your sewer charge the way it would in a city that bills sewer on actual summer usage.

That's good news — but it also removes one of the early warning signs of a leak. If a valve sticks open or a lateral line cracks underground, the sewer side of your bill won't flag it. Water use itself still will, so it's worth comparing your July bill to last July. A sudden jump with no change in habits usually means the system is losing water somewhere you can't see.

Laying New Sod?

The city issues a temporary sod watering permit that lets you water outside the normal odd/even schedule while new seed or sod establishes. Request it through Public Works before the sod goes down. We can set a temporary establishment program on your controller and then switch it back to the normal schedule once the permit period ends — a step that's easy to forget and results in watering on the wrong days all season.

We service systems throughout Cottage Grove, from the established neighborhoods around Hidden Valley Park and Old Cottage Grove, out to newer construction near Mississippi Dunes and the areas along Ravine Parkway and Jamaica Avenue.

Cottage Grove sprinkler questions

Which days can I water in Cottage Grove?

Match your house number: even-numbered addresses water on even calendar days, odd-numbered addresses on odd days. No watering between noon and 4 p.m., and no watering at all on the 31st of the month.

My water bill jumped in July but my sewer charge didn't. Is something wrong?

Possibly. Cottage Grove bills sewer on winter-average use, so a summer leak won't show up on the sewer side at all — only in water usage. A large unexplained increase in water use is the signal to have the system checked for a stuck valve or an underground line break.

Are you actually based in Cottage Grove?

Yes. We're a family-owned company headquartered here, and Cottage Grove is our closest service area.
