In Minnesota, water left in an irrigation system freezes, expands, and cracks whatever is holding it — heads, valves, backflow assemblies, and buried lines. A compressed-air blowout clears the system before that happens. We run them from late September through early November, before the first hard freeze.
Minnesota doesn't freeze gently. The ground freezes deep, and it freezes and thaws repeatedly through the season. Water trapped in a lateral line expands roughly nine percent when it turns to ice, and it has nowhere to go — so it splits the pipe, cracks the head body, or ruptures the valve diaphragm.
The damage rarely announces itself in autumn. It shows up in spring, when you turn the system on and a zone won't pressurise, or water surfaces in the middle of the lawn. A mainline break found in May costs several times what the blowout would have.
Two things make a DIY blowout unreliable. The first is volume: clearing a residential zone properly needs somewhere in the range of 80-120 CFM of airflow, and a typical homeowner compressor delivers closer to 10 to 15. It will make noise and move some water, but it won't clear the laterals.
The second is pressure. Too much pressure through a system with the water evacuated will destroy the components you're trying to protect — gears in rotor heads, diaphragms in valves. The right blowout is high volume at controlled pressure, zone by zone, and it's the combination that matters.
That last item matters more than people expect. Autumn is when we find the problems worth fixing before winter rather than after it.
